Sword Art Online 15
Following on the footsteps of last episodes high stakes action and surprises, episode 15 provides a bit of a breather with a very touching, low key episode...
This is a jarringly different episode, with a steady but deliberate pace. There is a very effective use of color here. It is much more muted which very effectively gets across the banality of the world in comparison to the the game and the sense of dispair encroaching upon Kirito's life.
Oh yes...about that. Henceforth our protagonist will be referred to by his real name, Kazuto Kirigaya. Kirito was just his in-game handle.
Anyway, Kirit...er...Kazuto's sister, Suguha, is practicing kendo in their rather ginormous Tokyo yard. Our hero (Say it with me: Ka-zu-to) has been in physical therapy for 2 months. He has kept the helmet that entombed him for two years on his desk and as he ponders getting out of bed he glares at it. Eventually, he ambles downstairs and watches his sister, run through her kata.
When she finishes he asks to spar with him in the dojo. Which leads to an amusing match where, out of habit, he uses video game-fu with rather mixed results.
Yer doin' it wrong.
Though he looses, he does not do so ignominiously. He asks his little sister, who has surpassed him in training over the past two years to help him return to the art. He then sets to going about his day...
...and what a day it is.
The show is a different sort of show now, but in an entirely different way than I thought it would be. This was a very low key episode but a hell of a lot happened. Kazuto got run through the ringer here but that flicker of hope at the end was a fine hook.
This episode shook things up in a most intriguing fashion and I'm certainly interested in seeing where it goes next.

Now, I know this isn't going to turn into a harem show, but I wouldn't complain if Lisbeth and Silica started hanging out with Suguha so they could find someone else to crush on together.

Hmmm..that could work. Have a spinoff series about these girls who've been scarred in some way by SAO. Have them glom onto some inoffensive schlep. Then have hijinks ensue. If you got Kyo-Ani to animate it. Wonderduck would watch it and we wouldn't have to. Everybody wins!
