HE DID IT!
Felix Baumgartner broke the sound barrier after leaping from a balloon at an altitude of 24 miles. He achieved Mach 1.24!

Interestingly, Joeseph Kittenger (now 84), the man who set the previous record in 1960 was heading up Baumgartner's ground team.
That's one giant leap. Period.
