Friggatriskaidekaphobia

...seems less crazy when Kill La Kill moves from satire to prophecy.

The end times: They are upon us.
Exam week, UPS in December, the Term Paper From Hell, Term Paper From Hell Take Two because I could not get enough primary sources, the DVD of holocaust testimonials that the Library computer ATE and the resulting Term Paper From Hell Take Three and TPFH3: The Reimagining because I did not save as often as I should have have all conspired to keep me ignorant of current events.

Here are a few things I missed:

The US and Chinese Navies are conducting collision avoidance exercises in the South China Sea

According to the officials, the run-in began after a Chinese navy vessel sent a hailing warning and ordered the Cowpens to stop. The cruiser continued on its course and refused the order because it was operating in international waters.

Then a Chinese tank landing ship sailed in front of the Cowpens and stopped, forcing the Cowpens to abruptly change course in what the officials said was a dangerous maneuver.

Cdr Salamander, who had some experience with this sort of operation back during the Cold War and shares his thoughts on this and adds some important perspective.

...take a powder;

Indeed we had this type of run-in with the USSR fairly often so this is not in and of itself a big deal. The fact that China is using Cold War Soviet naval harassment tactics might be.

Healthcare.gov requires you give all your important info to get insurance. It has no meaningful security.

If you live in a house gifted to you, are a Democratic Party activist and write an essay online pretending to be dirt poor you can get 100,000 dollars via internet donations.

If you are a child of privilege and kill 4 people while driving drunk on stolen beer, you can get off with probation because you were spoiled which led to a mental condition called affluenza.

If you are a cancer patient and criticize the administration publicly for stopping your cancer treatments you are going to get audited. If you provide legal assistance to administration critics you are going to get audited
. (Not that this is in ANY way a criticism, heavens no!, just an observation of how uppity wreckers get what's coming to them)

On an unrelated side note: I grew up in a country called America. Perhaps I'll blog about what that was like sometime.

The economic trends are worrisome. The 'velocity of money' is the slowest it's been since the middle of the depression. I'm an undergraduate, so I was not entirely certain what that means, thus a  quote:
It describes the frequency that one unit of currency is used to purchase goods and services or the number of times one dollar is spent to buy goods and services in a given period of time.  If the velocity of money is increasing, more buying and selling is taking place, conversely, if the velocity of money is decreasing, as is the current situation, then less buying and selling is taking place.

Read the whole thing also explains why inflation, while worse than the government is reporting, is not anywhere as bad as some have predicted...Of course
if the 'VoM' increases  then we have a whole new problem...runaway inflation.

It's looking grim either way.

It is snowing in Cairo.

As near as I can tell, this is not Satire.

"otherkin" is a fannish name for things like elves, fairies, vampires, lycanthropes, and similar mythical beings who look similar to humans but aren't really. According to the Urban Dictionary:

Otherkin are a fringe group of human society who, for one reason or another, believe themselves to be the reincarnation of mythic creatures, typically elves, though others include dragons, demons, vampires, ogres, deities, and so on. Related groups include therianthropes, who believe themselves reincarnations of animal souls, and otakin/otakukin, people who think they are reincarnations of fictitious characters from Japanese anime, manga, and video games.

Otherkin often find themselves the subject of ridicule. In the majority of cases, it is because their beliefs fly in the face of rational, critical thinking and tend to fall apart very quickly under hard scrutiny. One of the most common beliefs is of an Elven Holocaust in which humankind supposedly wiped the elves from the Earth, despite the fact that no such evidence, archaeological or otherwise, exists anywhere in the geologic record either for the supposed holocaust, let alone the existence of elves.

Other aspects common to Otherkin belief include a sense of superiority over their fellow human beings. This takes a variety of forms, such as a tendency to ascribe positive aspects of the human personality as something only unique to Otherkin. "Mundanes", the rest of humanity who do not share their beliefs or are simply unaware of them, are looked down upon as inferior brutes.

Otherkin often exhibit certain personality traits common to dissociative disorders and manic depression. This includes what are known as grandiose, persecutory, and religious delusions.

This combination makes them very unpopular.

2 Furries are another sub-category, and they're slightly worse.

3 Furries aren't otherkin. They're strange, but they aren't crazy.

4 A lot of them share the Otherkin delusion of being some kind of animal spirit trapped in a human body, hate humanity, and have a persecution complex about it (excuse me, fursecution).

Now it may have started out as an Animation and Comics fandom (I kinda got involved with it in the mid '80's at an Anime club) but I watched it evolve and finally washed my hands of the whole freak show in 2001, so I know of what I speak.

5 Once there were enough people insisting that gender was a social construct, extending it to species was inevitable. I'm sure there's someone on Tumblr right now convinced that rhe is actually a Boulder trapped in a human body, filled with rage about organic privilege and lichen-shaming, and engaged in a mighty flamewar against some piece of Schist.

6 I ran across the "Otherkin" pages years ago, when I was still cataloguing Every Single Filksong on the internet. The really disturbing bit wasn't the fact that they were delusional; it was that they gave instructions on "how to find your Otherkin self" that were basically a handbook to achieve psychological dissociation and split off a few personalities. Apparently, delusional loves company.
