Sap and the Refusal to Remain One

Episode 13 of RWBY is a very brief (5 and a half minute), almost perfunctory bridge to set up what will no doubt be the resolution of the Jeaune Arc arc cour next week.

There are inconveniences, affronts and indignities that some will endure as they strive to achieve their dreams.  There are also lines that one encounters on the path of ones life that are not to be crossed, beyond which redemption is impossible or at the very best hollow.

The truest measure of a man is not how behaves when all eyes are upon him, but rather what choices he makes when he is alone, terrified and outmatched, where his doing the right thing will never be known and will result in the shattering of his dreams and public disgrace.

The episode length of this series occasionally kills its pacing.  I hear a lot of complaints that this "Jaune arc thing has gone on far too long".

It's gone on for 13 minutes.

But it's been spread out over 2 weeks so people are justifiably asking when the HELL the main story is going to resume.

Of course this first 16 episode season is to be compiled into a DVD release of 100 minutes or more so editing for the 5-7 minute length would break up the movie.

The show is a cliche' buffet with minimalist CGI that is jarring to look at. The new monster designs by Patrick Rodriguez don't have the haunting and sinister quality of Monty Oum's original designs (seen in the trailers) and are really a step down. There is occasionally hackneyed writing. The pacing of individual episodes is wildly uneven, ranging from sublime to terrible.

And yet...I really want to see next weeks episode and that's been the case for every episode except perhaps 11. The characters are actually quite engaging, thanks to little bits like this episodes' brief interaction between Jeaune and Ruby. The world is genuinely interesting.

This is by no means a great show, but it's kept my interest from the start and, it's uneven pacing notwithstanding, it's getting progressively better. The voice work and soundtrack are quite good and for all the criticisms of the recent focus on the team Juniper...I must say it was genuinely not expected.

A lot will depend on how they wrap this first volume up, but I'm sticking with RWBY at least for the first season (16 eps). Unlike some other shows I've reviewed, I do this with no trepidation.
