UPDATE:

Well that could have gone better.
But it could have gone a whole lot worse.

I didn't QUITE finish the exam. I was one of several people who was scribbling away furiously when time was called....and 5 minutes later when 'Double Secret Time" was called.

I'd skipped the 2 point and 4 point sections of the exam to focus on the expansive 20 and 30 point sections. I'm glad she labeled how much each section was weighted 'cause that 30 point section was at the end. As it is, I think I got most of what I wrote down right (except for one set of hieroglyphic homonyms that I spent entirely too much time staring at). I was surprised at the considerable weight given to the "Explain why this kanji means what it means" portion which was a welcome respite from looking up kanji in tiny tiny fonts.

I think I got at least a C and possibly a B, certainly not great and probably not enough to save the class, but it was not unmitigated ignominy. I'll know in a couple of days if I graduate this weekend.

I was unaware how tired I was until I sat down in front of my computer and realized.."No. No. I'm going to bed."

Also: The grass is cut.

1 I guarantee that you did 500,000% better on that test than most of us would. However you did.
(Every time I get proud of myself, I try to get katakana and hiragana into my permanent memory. I have tried everything, and it still will not stick for more than a few letters. I had better luck memorizing the Hunter x Hunter font!)
(So I am proud I have about ten kanji down, and amazed that you could take a while test like that.)
(I can read and write Cyrillic cursive, for goodness' sake! Egyptian hieroglyph syllabaries are not that bad, even if I cannot draw them.... What is my functional illiteracy in Japanese about?)
(So yeah, that is the kind of course where a C may not be bad, and curve grading would be appropriate.)

2 I'm supposed to have, at the end of this class, a vocabulary of about 900 kanji. In actuality, I can probably read less than 100 without resorting to a dictionary. I still have trouble with some Katakana from time to time. This has been really humbling.

3 I really should have bought all those Japanese syllabary blocks for babies when I saw them once in a Japantown bookstore. I need kana magnets and other tactile stuff. Also fingerpaints. And jello stencils.
