A Question for Those With Their Ear to the Ground on Tech

Are there any smatwatches in the pipeline that don't require an actual smatphone? It looks like one could easily have all the capability of a decent flip phone, which, honestly is all I need.

This IS the 21st century and I WANT my Jonny Quest wrist phone.

1 There are several now, I think; although I haven't kept up much.  The more recent Samsung Gear models are standalone, although some of them have to be configured with a paired phone first.  There's something called a Neptune, too; IIRC.

2 Watch out for that Neptune, at least the first-gen one.  Linus Tech Tips reviewed it and said it's basically junk.
Just checked their website and they're talking about a newer version, but it's "click here to get notified if it ever comes out".
