Thoughts on The Mess in Europe

Russia has invaded The Ukraine.

People are panicking about stocks, but there is not much to be done. The market has gone up and down and back up and down hundreds of points today. A war in Ukraine has all sorts of secondary effects and those depend upon events and policy decisions by our current executive branch (eg : Defense stocks going up? maybe/maybe not).

Once the situation stabilizes the markets will recover. Just don't panic and sell on the dip.

Make sure your fuel is topped off and you have cash on hand.

As an example my Credit Union is having IT "issues" and I can't access my monies right now. I expect more like this and fuel shortages due to cyber-attacks, panic, or both over the next few days.

The internet seems twitchy today. That may or may not be significant.

We've been in a pandemic for two years so I expect everybody has several weeks of canned food on hand. That won't be necessary except in the unlikely event this damn fool thing in the Donbas snowballs ad-absurdum.

Take everything you read or watch with a grain of salt, for the fog of war is thick indeed.

1 I had predicted on Monday (Before news of the entry of Russian peacekeepers into the Donbas.) that the next 72 hours would be very tense - due to the Russians finishing up the deployment of their naval force in the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.  Someone in the Kremlin apparently decided to play 'Bingo!' with that.

I will now predict that sometimes in the next 72 hours, Joe Biden will make a speech publicly calling for Ukraine to capitulate to the Russians to "preserve the safety of the containment shelter at Chernobyl" and "stop the needless bloodshed and heightened danger to our future."  Bonus points if Biden adds 'children' to the last line.

2 I guess one cannot be this lucky all the time. Russians took control of both Chernobil and Zaporozie nuclear plants. Operations are proceeding normally at both sites, there were no radiation leaks or frankly any significant damage.

3 BTW, is Botan canceled or not? I do not follow vtubers in general but I heard there was a scandal, and possibly a schism among SSRBs.

6 Sadly I didn't save the Russian messages to which she replied. But they were heartfelt at the level of Windows XP.

8 Botan was streaming earlier today (Or yesterday, depending on where you are.).  So she seems to be doing well, when she is not giving advice to the other members of Hololive on what computer parts they should be buying.

At least she is actually entertaining, which is more than I can say about Jimmy Kimmel - once one of the less offensive late night hosts, now completely unhinged by Trump hatred to Stephen Colbert/Seth Meyer's levels of dumb.
