I Just Realized Something

Blake's bow...

From RWBY episode 8

..I mean she has people ears, right there on the side of her head where they belong, so that thing on her head must be a bow, and yet...the bow...it emotes.

Perhaps as part of a concerted effort to maintain balance in the universe, episode 9 followed up on last weeks breakneck pace and thoroughly satisfying battle with...the girls re-arranging their room. Next week looks exciting though.

One of the neater things about the series is the completely impractical but well thought out transforming weaponry. In the first of the teaser trailers, Ruby uses what appears to be the recoil of her scythe's large caliber rifle to propel her out of harm's way. However, in later episodes it's more obvious that Ruby is using rocket assist to increase the  velocity of the scythe's strikes. She's not cycling the bolt and in any event in these cases the recoil is directed perpendicular to the barrel.

Additionally, Pyrrha's rifle converts into both a sword and a rocket powered javelin.

You just...threw away your gun.

Nora's grenade launcher unfolds into a warhammer which not only uses rocket assist to greatly increase the velocity of her strikes, it can propel her on a ballistic trajectory over a considerable distance.

The fact that firing unaimed bullets in random directions during a fight is bad leads me to believe that these weapons don't use conventional cartridges, but have separate propellant and bullet feeds (much like a Lorenzoni).

The best way to do this is probably to use a liquid or possibly gaseous propellant. The weapons bullets (or grenades, in Nora's case) seem to be manually cycled into the chamber either by bolt (Ruby) lever (Pyrrha) or pump (Nora) actions, keeping the chamber clear except when gunfire is needed. This is a useful safety feature, since we see several times that the rocket assists are activated by the flick of a switch. Presumably the propellant is pressure fed. This also jives with Ruby having two separate magazines, only one of which needs to be reloaded and the fact that in the trailer, her 'shell casings' look more like CO2 cartridges.

Pyrrha .gif was done by FISHNSPICE. The rest are of unknown provenance.

1 The first episode revealed a magical substance called Dust that provided magical energy inthis world.  I assume that their weapons are powered by that, sometimes in the form of expendable cartridges,

2 Yeah, I'd thought about that, which is why the Lorenzonni came to mind but I think these are a blending of tech. I got the impression that Ruby doesn't use magic or at least dust.

Weiss certainly does and it's clear that Nora's grenades are dust based, but as to what propels them? The show's made in Texas...so I'm guessing propane, which makes the weapons propane accessories.

3 OTOH, Ruby WAS in a Dust shop in the first episode.   On the gripping hand, she seemed confused in episode 2 about the stuff, when she ran into Weiss.

4 It looked like she was loitering  in a 24 hour Dust, drygoods, magazine and music store.
I could be way off, but I get the impression that she doesn't use Dust and may not be a magic user at all.
