SOTUS 2010

Random, real time stream of consciousness thoughts on the State of the Union speech. Now mercifully hidden below the fold.

Other reactions here, herehere and Wonderduck has one of the healthiest and well grounded SOTUS night posts right here.

I'm no booster of this guy but he is the POTUS and I hope he can turn things around.

Oh good no boos.
If we can get through this with no input from the SC Peanut gallery that will be a victory in itself.

Nice opening, he mentions D-Day.

All about the economy thus far.

"Strained but hopeful...struggling but encouraged" (WKRP riff?)

"It begins with our economy" Oh good.

OK on the Bank fee, If they pay it back, the fee is unnecessary.

He's claiming to have cut taxes...I don't doubt this is true in the short term.

Oh dear lord..."created or saved"

Who on the RIGHT has said this recovery act is working?

Anecdotal stories, most seem to involve govt. jobs. (IE: net drains on the economy)

OK here we go, full metal pivot on a jobs bill.

Jobs bill=stimulus 2?

This is the first time I think WAIT WHAT!!?

We will take the repaid TARP money and FORCE banks to lend to small bidnesses. This duplicates the mistake we made with the real estate bubble.

High speed rail.

Clean energy=nookler? probably not.

Jobs bill won't make up for loses...honest.

OK the talk about long term solutions is dead on....until he says China/India are wasting money on "clean jobs".

No 2nd place 4 USA, bipartisan applause as it should be.

Banking reform is deeply worrisome from this guy but the notion that too big to fail is bad is real.

OK NOOKLER! W0ot!
Drill baby drill!
Great!
Oh
Drat...cap and trade...well poop.....

"Can you aford it?" No It will triple everybodies energy bill.
........................

Jobs...exports
HOW?
OK trade deals not bad idea.
Oh my...this sounds like Smoot Hawley.

...............................

Education:
He wants to reform education. Not one mention of the NEA.

Community college emphasis is an acceptable kludge around that, I suppose.

Holy hell...
Forgive loans?
Forgive loans better for public service rather than productive people....woah.

...................

Health care:
Same mess.
We will add more people to the rolls and this will cut the deficit....
....saynuwhahhuh?

I'm not hearing a word about allowing insurance competition across state lines.

He's going to make his stand on this....(facepalm)

.....................................................

Deficits:
Decent points
Decent points

ALL BUSHITLERS FAULT

Acknowledged the 1 trillion deficit.

Good point about the budgeting.
Freeze gubmint spending.....except for the expensive stuff.
Less ambitious than McCains proposal in 08.

MY watch....hmmmm.

OK the Gregg/Conrad proposal is a decent proposal.....point.

Good hearty congressional laugh at the punch line."It wont take effect till next year."

Last few minutes have been a good solid republican speech.

"Do our work openly." Yeah  that WOULD be nice.

Lobbyists not hired by...wait whut....who...huh...I am..
My head done 'sploded

....................................
Earmark reform
McCain/Palin call your office.

....................................

"We can't wage a perpetual campaign"
'Kaaay...

.......................................

Not interested in Re-Litigating the past....Riiiiiight.
( Comment over at Ace o'Spades)

I don't want to blame anyone here. (But we all know who's fault it is "wink")

National defence:
Broad Cliffs notes version of a Bush Speech. Not much to disagree with except the withdrawal timetable.
Oh wait...
We added some nai'vite
Eleminate Nukes.....
('cept 4 Iran)

"Iran will face growing concequences"
Lets hope Israel doesn't.

Again...we have slipped into a bush speech regards foreign policy

Yay Haiti relief! (really)

It's 10:14 and we are in the glittering generalities phase.

....
....
....
Cynicism is bad 'mkaay.

I...
I...
I...
"Democracy is messy"

I think it...Yes its over.....

Wow.
20 minutes over.

My laptop battery died...I'm back.

McDonnell gave a pretty damned good speech. He said as much in 12minutes as the POTUS did in 80. I liked that he pointed out areas of agreement as well as differences. Another big thing was to get the fact that the conservatives do have a health care plan and I hink he articulated that pretty well.

The idea of having it in the State House and in front of an audience was a master stroke visually.
