That succinctly explains why those songs are rarely translated.
However, it can be done....
In addition to the above informative exposition, Amanda Lee did this cover of the first Attack on Titan OP,
...and Christina Vee sang the OP for the dub of Nichijou (which was cancelled weeks from its scheduled release, when Bandai USA just suddenly packed up shop and left the US market).
And there is this decent cover of Magia...which seems to have been used in at least one episode of the dub.
UPDATE:This makes sense as the song is quite expository, especially when one realized who it's about.
So it's not COMPLETELY impossible to pull off...
Of course, disasters like this loom large in everyones mind...(over a year since I encountered that and I still can't unhear it).
