Where is my Flying Car ?

In Oshkosh actually...

This neat little flying car can take off in the length of a football field. The designer built it with missionary and relief work in mind, but it's been certified by the FAA and is street legal.

It is expected to be in production later this year.

Interesting Finds and Linky Luv

Steven Den Beste has just watched Havoc in Heaven and seemed to like it.

Actual footage of his reaction taken by one of our crack team of espionage beavers

Wonderduck had a rather different reaction to Rio Rainbow Gate...but it seems to have driven him over the edge, so everything's OK now.

I would normally be unlikely to give a magical girl show a second thought. However Ubu indicates that Puella Magi Madoka Magica seems to going into some very interesting (and dark) places.

Don is asking the hard questions.

Beta Waffle is back! Has been for some time...but I'm slow in noticing these things.

( For example, a few months ago I was surprised to see DVDs of Linebarrels of Iron for sale. I had no idea the show actually existed. I had thought that LOI was a joke strip by Beta Waffle parodying Anime cliche's...Actually, it was a show composed of Anime cliches that Beta Waffle was mocking/reviewing. )

Linkypalooza

It's that time of year. Things have been a tad hectic of late and aside from a few minutes a day fulfilling my ninja obligations I've not been online much. However,  I just slogged through 389 E-mails, and am now otherwise nearly caught up.

There are a few links that have caught my eyes over the last few weeks. In many cases I intended to offer meaningful insightful commentary, but in the absence of any actual insight I'll just leave them here.

We are in deep kimchee. Really deep. There is no way out that does not involve considerable pain. The Tea Party types have talked a lot about cutting spending but specifics are few and far between. Paul Ryan actually has a plan  but pretty much everyone seems to be averting their eyes, as it is alarmingly sound and therefore a bitter pill indeed. Well, not everyone. Ace has more thoughts here.

Golly, this is so awful it almost defies parody. However, as I am a geek, it does remind me of a Star Trek episode.

Scott Lowther has pics of the new Chinese stealth fighter.

The New Republic has the Chinese reading list.

Having been a hazmat responder, I told my leftie friends about this and was dismissed. Vile bulbs are vile. It's worse than this, because cumulative effects and build up in the food chain occur even if your waste is politically correct.

X-Ray Lightning!

ZOMG...the pros from Dover have arrived!

TVA is working on Mini Nukes!

Hobbit eating storks.

Yay! Trinitramid! And here I said that plot point in Rocket Girls was silly.

Remember MS Bob? I don't, but it could have been the future. Oh, but for the want of some regulators was the future denied. Via Jerry Pournelle, More on this here.

Another "What if?"

The alternative to having ones junk touched. Have it shipped.

“initial operational capability,” Eww.

Ubu explains a joke...no really click on it.

Ubu has thoughts on this show here, and mentions that its ending credits sequence  is above par...

Ubu is right. I'm going to have to track this one down. Also, there is an accordion dance.

Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold, But if you Utterly Suck its Gonna be Lukewarm and Taste like Natto

Arlene Harris ( Plucky Grrl Detective) has put together a comprehensive and painstaking analysis of what appears to be pretty cut and dried plagiarism....of Colleen Doran's A Distant Soil.

But it gets strange...because it would appear to be plagiarism intended as revenge..but with almost comical incompetence attached at almost every level.

Harris has done yeoman's work here.

Read the whole thing. No really...I know it's as long as a Bill Whittle essay but this is really astonishing on a number of levels. I first encountered this post nearly a week ago and now that there are multiple updates; the affair has gotten even stranger with the denials.

You should also read A Distant Soil, and if you have any interest in the professional side of the comic industry you should scroll down and be reading Colleen Doran's blog there as well.

A Few Quick Links

I'm trapped by the rain so here are a few links of note. Some of them are quite sobering but I highly recommend them.

Via Jerry Pournelle comes this worrisome piece on Inflation and the fall of Rome. The fact that seems to be timely is whats worrisome.

Baldilocks has the first two in a series of posts up on racism, the political weaponization thereof, peer pressure and the cages of the mind. These are both long posts but they are really important IMHO. They're here and here. (Due to a Typepad glitch both links take the reader well down the page).

The Kepler Space Telescope has discovered 140 Earthsized planets in the last couple of weeks! More here.

Ray Bradbury speaks (via The Anchoress)

Neo posts on the use of 'decoy Jews' in an attempt to try and protect actual Jews in Amsterdam, and how this is provoking consternation amongst those who say that taking action against those who harass Jews is....discrimination (no really).

Anime Dub Reviews

In a world...

...where certain fans believe that anyone who dubs anime is commiting a crime against humanity and anyone who listens to the dubs is a racist, homophobic, troglodyte who hates unicorns.....

 ...one brave man...
...has dared to buck the pretentious prima-donnas and give thoughtful, well researched and literate reviews and analysis of the English dubs of the Western Anime releases.

  John Turner is that man.

UPDATE: Actually it appears to be a group blog and John Turner is but one of three brave souls standing in defense of the notion that dubs are legitimate and enjoyable interpretations.

Random Stuff

I've been down with Pneumonia last week which has put me waaay behind on schoolwork and I've been scrambling to catchup.

Here are a few things that caught my eye the last few days.

Vikings Versus Pirates !!
The Danes have boarded a buccaneered ship freed it from Somali pirates. The Russians assisted with mop up as well.
Interestingly, the Danish warship involved was HDNS Absalon a vessel which has been of considerable interest to many naval enthusiasts.  More on this incident here, here, here, and here.

The Obama administration is actually making some good moves with regard to nuclear power. However, Brian Wang reports that the US suffers from serious deficiencies in industrial capacity in that area.

Rand Simberg sees a lot to like in Obamas space policy. While I disagree with Simberg on his notion that there is no utility a heavy lift capability, I heartily agree that the emphasis on using commercial vehicles (like Falcon and Dragon), and focusing manned operations on techniques for orbital refueling and construction as well as asteroid missions is likely to be very beneficial in the long run. There is irony in this. The administration obviously believes in a top down big government model as the proper way to do most things. This space policy is so out of step with everything else they have proposed that it may actually be a gesture of contempt on their part. If alt-space is indeed contempt....then yay for contempt! More here.

Dr Zero has a long piece on Socialism and how to deal with it before we go the way of Europe and ultimately Argentina.

Good grief....even Keynes is spinning in his grave.

I disagree with the premise behind this kerfuffle. PC is a blight upon the land. There are quite few other reasons that the WH chief of staff should resign. He's a thug. More importantly, he is an incompetent thug. Much of the visible failures of this administration have been the result of poor staff work. That would be the chief of staffs job.

On the other hand I liked what I heard of the speech.

Not that it matters 'cause.....Oh noes...GAME OVER MAAAN!1! ... GAME OOOVER!
    UPDATE: HI Mom!

A true jerk, brought to justice.

On the lighter side...

Colleen Doran has a new portfolio website up and her blog continues to be updated as well.

A lot of what people think they know about the internet is actually quite wrong. This enlightening video explains the structure of the system and points out the cause of potential capacity problems.

HT Meryl Yourish

In the current news environment where hype is never ending white noise, it is important for broadcasters to find ways of getting peoples attention when necessary....

DVDs I've recently finished: Full Metal Alchemist and Spice and Wolf. Reviews as soon as I get caught up.

First H1N1....Now This

There appears to be an outbreak of yellow fever in the comments section at Stevens site.

Interestingly, this development was actually foreseen by members of  the  bitter, angry, shrewish, insecure, catty, coalition who sounded the alarm over a month ago. However, their response was epidemiologically suspect as it made BASICC came off as not just whiny but racist to boot...

BASICC might have been more effective had they quietly linked to this or this.

Babes come in all hues....as do shrews.

For those that have not been following,  Wonderducks mom went into the hospital recently. I just received an IM from him.  The diagnosis for her is not hopeless but it is very worrisome. Send him some prayers...If you cant do that keep him in your thoughts. He's not likely to be posting much but I imagine kind comments would be appreciated.

Aerospace Projects Review

A few months ago I rather furtively purchased an item from Aerospace Projects Review. The item was on the stillborn project Meteor, a 1950's proposal for an orbital space station I mentioned in passing here.

I immediately bit the bullet and subscribed.

It is worth every frigging penny.

Lowther is an aerospace engineer and has meticulously researched and obtained information on all manner of historical projects, both those that were built and those that weren't.

Mr. Lowther is also an accomplished draftsman and he provides superb artwork both by himself and people like Damon Moran to complement the existing schematics and his in depth analysis...

PLUTO art by Damon Moran

There is a lot of crap on the internet concerning projects that were never built...much of it utter bilge. Lowther's site is NOT one of those.

I cannot recommend this site highly enough. The prices are nominal and the information on various aerospace projects  is amongst the most detailed available.

Anyway....plug.

Battlewagon Blogging

CDR Salamander has a weekly feature called Full Bore Friday that deals with maritime heroism of both individuals and units. It's always worth a read. This week he focuses on the battleship USS Washington.

Washington saw more action than any other US Battleship in history and was for a time the only operational allied Battleship in the Pacific theater.
CDR Salamander has fine overview as well as the after action report of the second battle of Savo Island where Washington sent the IJNS Kirishima to the bottom.

Go read the whole thing and add CDR Salamander to your link list.
