Seems to have worked fine.
What I found interesting is that until nearly the end, I never saw anything that said, "This must be Japan!" to me. It could have been Michigan for all I knew -- until one sign came by that had a lone kanji on it. Aside from that, nada.

There were two things I noticed that made me realize we weren't in Kansas anymore, but only a railfan would notice them.
1) The crossings were protected by gates of a type not used in the US; and...
2) The train did not blow its horn at the crossings like they have to do here.
Other than that, I'd agree with Steven... oddly cool.
